VivaTest 9-in-1 Saliva Drug & Alcohol Test Kit combines eight drug screening panels with a separate alcohol pad in a compact oral fluid device. It screens for amphetamine, cannabis, benzodiazepines, fentanyl, opiates, methamphetamine, cocaine and tramadol, alongside alcohol.
This mouth swab drug test uses a built-in collection pad, so there is no need for a urine or blood sample. Designed for professional in vitro diagnostic use, it provides preliminary screening results without an electronic reader. Drug panels and the alcohol pad have different reading times and must be interpreted separately.
Why choose the VivaTest saliva drug and alcohol test?
- Eight drug panels plus alcohol: multiple screening targets in an oral fluid device.
- Non-invasive collection: collect saliva using the device's own mouth swab pad.
- Dedicated fentanyl and tramadol panels: these targets are screened separately from the general opiates panel.
- No electronic equipment required: visually read the drug lines and alcohol pad using the supplied instructions.
- Defined screening cut-offs: check the exact drug thresholds in the table below.
- Drug results at 5 minutes after collection: read at 5 minutes after removing the device from the mouth; collection time is additional.
- Professional screening format: supports supervised oral fluid collection and initial result interpretation.
Which substances does this saliva test screen for?
The device has drug panels labelled AMP, THC, BZO, FYL, OPI, MET, COC and TML, plus an ALC alcohol pad. The drug cut-offs below are taken from the supplied product leaflet.
| Drug panel | Code | Reference substance | Cut-off (ng/mL) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amphetamine | AMP | d-Amphetamine | 50 |
| Cannabis | THC | THC-COOH (11-nor-Δ9-THC-9-COOH) | 20 |
| Benzodiazepines | BZO | Oxazepam | 20 |
| Fentanyl | FYL | Fentanyl | 10 |
| Opiates | OPI | Morphine | 10 |
| Methamphetamine | MET | d-Methamphetamine | 25 |
| Cocaine | COC | Cocaine | 20 |
| Tramadol | TML | Tramadol | 35 |
Alcohol screening: the leaflet states an ALC threshold of 0.02%. Alcohol is assessed by a colour-changing pad and is not reported in ng/mL.
What do cut-off levels mean? ng/mL means nanograms per millilitre. Each drug panel is calibrated to a reference substance at its stated screening threshold. Other substances within a drug group can react at different concentrations; a panel does not detect every related drug equally. This test does not measure the exact amount of a drug in the sample.
For more background, read our drug detection times and cut-off levels guide. Always use the supplied leaflet for the thresholds and instructions specific to this device.
How to use the oral fluid drug test
Read the complete instructions before collecting the sample. Use only the collection pad supplied with the device.
- Prepare: allow the device to reach room temperature, between 15°C and 30°C. The person being tested should not eat, drink, smoke or chew tobacco for at least 10 minutes before collection.
- Open the device: remove it from the sealed pouch and gently take off the blue cap to expose the collection pad.
- Collect saliva: gently rub the pad against the cheek and tongue in a circular motion about 10 times, then place it under the tongue for approximately 1 to 2 minutes.
- Check sample flow: continue as directed until red-coloured liquid is moving in both test windows. Collection may take longer when saliva volume is low; follow the leaflet's additional collection instructions.
- Finish collection: remove the device from the mouth, replace the cap and lay it on a flat surface.
- Read the drug panels: read at 5 minutes after removing the device from the mouth. Do not read drug results after 15 minutes.
- Read the alcohol pad separately: follow the leaflet's 2-minute ALC reading instruction and compare the pad with the supplied alcohol colour chart. Do not interpret the alcohol result after 5 minutes.
How to read the drug test results
Interpret each drug panel independently within the specified reading time. The control line is marked C and the drug test line is marked T.
- Negative: a control line and a test line are visible for that drug panel. A faint coloured test line still counts as negative when the control line is present.
- Presumptive positive: the control line is visible but the test line for that drug panel is absent. A more specific laboratory method is needed to confirm the result.
- Invalid: the required control line is absent, regardless of any test line. Check the collection and testing procedure, then repeat with a new device.
Do not compare the darkness of different drug test lines to estimate drug levels. The alcohol pad uses colour comparison rather than the C/T line rule.
Understanding the alcohol screening pad
The ALC pad reacts to alcohol in oral fluid. A green-to-blue colour change indicates a presumptive positive result according to the leaflet. Compare the pad with the manufacturer's alcohol colour chart at the stated reading time.
This is preliminary alcohol screening. The pad does not provide a precise blood alcohol measurement or establish whether someone is safe to drive or work. The stated 0.02% threshold should not be treated as a legal driving limit.
Professional and workplace drug screening
The leaflet specifies professional in vitro diagnostic use. The saliva format allows supervised collection without urine sampling. When considering it for a workplace drug testing programme, check that the panel coverage and screening method match your organisation's requirements.
Workplace testing requires appropriate consent and procedures. A rapid screening result should be interpreted professionally, with confirmatory laboratory testing for presumptive positive drug results before consequential decisions. For UK consent guidance, see GOV.UK information on drug testing at work.

Frequently asked questions
Does this test include fentanyl and tramadol?
Yes. It has dedicated fentanyl (FYL) and tramadol (TML) drug panels, with stated reference cut-offs of 10 ng/mL and 35 ng/mL respectively.
Does the cannabis panel measure THC itself?
The leaflet lists THC-COOH, a cannabis metabolite, as the reference substance for the THC panel at 20 ng/mL. Related cannabinoid compounds can react at different concentrations, so this threshold should not be treated as 20 ng/mL for every form of THC.
Is a faint drug test line negative?
Yes. A visible coloured test line, even if faint, is negative for that panel when its control line is present and the result is read within the instructed time. This rule does not apply to the alcohol pad.
Does a negative result rule out all drug use?
No. A negative screen does not rule out substances outside the panel list or drug concentrations below the relevant threshold. Collection, timing and other factors can also affect a screening result.
Can a prescription medicine affect the result?
Some panels screen for substances that may also be prescribed, and cross-reacting substances can affect screening results. A positive screen alone does not establish medication misuse. Medication history and laboratory confirmation matter when interpreting a presumptive positive.

Important screening information
This device provides preliminary screening information. It does not diagnose drug dependence, measure exact drug concentrations or determine impairment. A presumptive positive drug result requires confirmation using a more specific laboratory method, such as GC-MS or LC-MS/MS, together with professional interpretation.
Follow the instructions supplied with your device. General resource guides support understanding and do not replace the product leaflet or a professional assessment.

It contains eight drug screening panels and a separate alcohol screening pad.
Is this a saliva drug test or a urine drug test?
This is a saliva drug test, also known as an oral fluid drug test. No urine sample is required.
What is included in the kit?
The kit includes the saliva screening device with an integrated oral fluid collection pad and protective cap, supplied in a sealed pouch with instructions for use.
Is this test suitable for self-testing?
Yes. The VivaTest oral fluid drug test is supplied for self-testing. Always read the instruction sheet fully before use.
How do I read the results?
Interpret each drug panel separately:
A control line (C) and a test line (T) indicate a negative result. A faint coloured test line still counts as negative.
A control line (C) without a test line (T) indicates a presumptive positive result requiring laboratory confirmation.
If the control line (C) is missing, the result is invalid. Repeat testing with a new device.
Read the alcohol pad using the manufacturer’s colour chart. It uses colour comparison rather than the drug-panel line rules. Follow the specified reading time for each result.
Does this test detect THC and cannabis?
The panel labelled THC is used for cannabis screening. The supplied leaflet specifies THC-COOH, a cannabis metabolite, as the reference substance at a cut-off of 20 ng/mL.
Related cannabinoid compounds can react at different concentrations, so this threshold should not be treated as 20 ng/mL for every form of THC.
Does this test detect cocaine?
Yes. The test includes cocaine screening with a cut-off level of 20 ng/mL.
How do I use this test correctly?
Follow the complete instructions supplied with the device. The person being tested should not eat, drink, smoke or chew tobacco for at least 10 minutes before collection.
Remove the blue cap and collect saliva using the integrated collection pad, following the leaflet’s collection and sample-flow instructions. Once collection is complete, remove the device from the mouth, replace the cap and place it on a flat surface.
Observe the separate reading times for the drug panels and alcohol pad.
How fast are the results?
Check the drug-panel results 5 minutes after removing the device from the mouth. Sample collection takes additional time. Do not read drug results after 15 minutes.
Read the alcohol pad separately at the leaflet’s 2-minute reading point. Do not interpret the alcohol result after 5 minutes.
