How to Choose a Daily Supplement
When comparing supplements, check the full ingredient list rather than relying only on the product name. Look at the amount provided per daily serving, the number of capsules required, the form of each vitamin or mineral and whether botanical extracts are concentrated or standardised.
You may also wish to consider:
- The number of daily servings in each bottle
- Whether the capsule shell is suitable for vegetarians or vegans
- Allergen and dietary information
- The percentage Nutrient Reference Value for vitamins and minerals
- Whether you already take another supplement containing the same nutrients
- Any medication or existing health condition that may affect suitability
Understanding Supplement Labels
Supplement labels show the recommended daily serving and the amount of each active ingredient provided. Vitamins and minerals may also display a percentage Nutrient Reference Value, commonly shortened to NRV.
For probiotic supplements, CFU means colony-forming units. Botanical products may show an extract ratio, such as 10:1, or a standardised percentage of a naturally occurring plant compound.
Always follow the directions shown on the individual product label and do not exceed the stated recommended daily dose.
